History of Sudsy Mama's Soaps & Sundries
Sudsy Mama's Soaps is a small one person business. Everything is made, packaged and mailed by hand. My business is located on Whidbey Island, in Washington State. I started making soap 8 years ago and began selling it after I had tested my products on family and friends and was satisfied with the product. Because I have dry skin, I first started making soaps and lotions for my own use. I never knew the difference in quality between store-bought soap and homemade soap until I started making it. I thought soap was soap. I could not believe the difference when I first tried it.
Since I made my first batch in my kitchen at home, I have increased the variety of items that I produce to fit the needs of my local customers. My goal is to continue making products that work for people who want better skin and health care products for their families. I love being able to help people with their own individual skin care needs. Many of my new product ideas have come directly from the needs or wants of my customers.
How Our Soap Is Made
I make a cold processed soap. I get my ingredients from all over the world. I search for the best possible ingredients I can find. All the soaps are made in 28 bar batches for quality. I tried making bigger batches but I didn’t feel the quality was the same. It takes about 3 hours from the time I measure the ingredients to the time that they are the right temperature to mix and pour into the molds. They are then covered by wool blankets for 24 to 48 hours. The soap is then un-molded and cut into bars and place on the curing racks. Although the soap can be used at this stage, I let it cure for 6 weeks so that the bar will be harder and last longer. I then bevel, label and weigh each soap. Each of my other products takes just as much time and care to produce. My body butter bars are my biggest resale item. People always want more after they have tried them. It took me two years to come up with the perfect blend of butters and oils.
I am proud of the soaps and lotions I have created. Please contact me if you have any more questions about how a product is made. I love talking to my customers and developing products to suit specific needs.
